The are many benefits to standing in line.
Lines foster the art of anticipation. When we stand behind another, we remember to believe we’ll have our turn, because we see those ahead of us having theirs. The longer the line, the more disciplined we become. We are less likely to give up and walk away when we’ve been in it awhile. Standing in line reminds us that we have something at stake – an opportunity to give or gain.
Shorter lines are sometimes helpful, but are often missed opportunities to master the wait. That is, lines, help us decipher whether or not what we are standing for, is worth the time or financial commitment associated with this vertical pause. I call this “active waiting” – because the very line itself causes us to assess the value of the wait.
As unplanned the occurrence of long lines may sometimes be, they serve as unexpected lesson in priority and purpose. And when appreciated, the experience becomes a great way to live a life satisfied with the choices we make.
Take care and live.
