The great shoe spill of 1990 and the Atlas Dunk High
Sometimes, sneaker releases bank simply on great design and an influential name, think the Travis Scott x SB Dunk. Sometimes, it's a well known and loved brand. Sometimes, with design bordering on the ridiculous (think the Ben & Jerry 'Chunky Dunky'). Sometimes however, a sneaker comes with interesting storytelling that makes you open wikipedia to dive deeper into the facts around a certain story.
Releasing on October 2nd on Atlas Skateboarding in two US only raffles as well as in select skate stores, the Atlas x Nike SB Dunk High 'Lost at Sea' is one of those drops. The story goes back to 1990, when a container ship on the way from Korea to the US encountered a big storm and lost 21 containers to the depths of the Pacific. Five of those containers contained Nike shoes, 61,000 pairs in total 🤯with known serial numbers, some of which washed ashore and could thus be clearly identified as belonging to the 'shoe spill. Part of the spill was a batch of blue and white Nike Air Flight 90s.
A skate shop on the West Coast of the US has now been inspired by this story and has created an ultra-clean Dunk High inspired by the spill.
The shoes feature a blue on white colorway just like the Air Flights from back in the day which provides a wearable Dunk High. But the cool part of the shoes itself is the nicely aged cream laces and midsole. Usually the bane of sneakerhead's who like to keep their kicks pristine, the pre-yellowing we've been seeing in 2020 is certainly refreshing and fits with the vintage trend in fashion today.
That's not where the story ends though. The shoes come with a hangtag and a bunch of extras featuring anchors and cartoon fish. Parts of the upper also feature subtle aging work to give the kicks an additional vintage appeal. Certainly, these will not be as hype as the Ben & Jerrys, but they are one of those cool IYKYK releases for collectors who value storytelling in their shoes.
