AKRON, Ohio -- Two new species are now on exhibit at the Akron Zoo.
The red-breasted geese and Siberian musk deer are both listed as "vulnerable" species by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
The deer came from the Bronx Zoo in New York to Akron per breeding recommendations from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums managed program.
Three-year-old male deer, Vlad, and three-year-old female deer, Anastasia, reside in the Akron Zoo's former sika deer habitat.
The red-breasted geese, native to Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan and surrounding countries, are on exhibit in the same area.
Siberian musk deer are named for the musk they secrete during mating season. They are native to the mountains and forests of northern Asia and Russia.
Their musk glands were once used for perfume making, causing the deer to become a desired species for poachers. The deer are also noted for their kangaroo-like facial features.
Both deer and the red-breasted geese can be viewed between 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Akron zoo, located at 505 Euclid Ave.
Admission to the zoo is $12 for adults, $10 for senior citizens and $9 for children ages 2-14 years old. Children younger than 2 years old can visit the zoo for free.
