Will these names stick should we ever live there?
I think it'd be more respectful to use the native names for all the places
Just look at the development of names where we do live.
There are tautological names like
Glendale - Glenn = valley, dale = valley => Valley Valley
River Avon - Avon = River => River River
Milky Way Galaxy - Galaxy = Milky => Milky Way Milky
Avenue Road
Because they are a mix of multiple languages.
Complicated names become shorter and easier
Dornwaracaster => Dorchester
Some places become named after their function
Keswick => Cheese Farm
Some after the people associated with it
Grimsby => Grims Farm
Barnsley => Beorn's clearing
On the river Gronta, a town called Grontabricc was founded and the name morphed towards Cantebruge and then Cambrugge and in the end Cambridge... hence the name of the river was changed to Cam.
So... no, not all of those names are gonna stick. Some may survive in a different form. Adamas Labyrinthus may morph to something like Adamslab, Nepenthes Planum may simply become Planning and so on.
There will be places like "Xin Foshan" build by the chinese and then sold to the europeans who mistranslate it to heartbeat and then call it "Beating" or something like that.
But who’s living beneath the crust already?
I first thought this was a map of current temperatures in North America
Looks like the next great MMORPG map of a mars civilization
Nice work, would be great to have a full size one for the western hemisphere too.
Made in the year 1219 by jesuit monks, very fucking nice.
Could someone explain to me why there is such a distinct gradient depression for a lot of the planet? The moon for instance is so much more even but with distinct pocks.
I just read about this today actually. The currently accepted theory is that around 4 billion years ago, perhaps during the Late Heavy Bombardment, some huge object made impact with Mars and basically flattened the whole northern hemisphere (it's one of the flattest areas that extensive in the whole Solar System). 40% of Mars's surface is the basin created from that. If that turned out to be true, it would mean that the basin is the biggest crater in the Solar System.
it’ll be interesting a hundred years from when we’ll get to Mars. I’m sure the language they’ll use will be different. Kinda like British english is different from American and Aussie
Martian English? Lmao but I doubt any mars colony would be very big. They would literally need to be shipped every kind of supply from earth to stay alive
Who says they’ll speak English? We all know the US is in decline.
